Founded in 1972 by Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Senator Robert Taft Jr. and Sam Beard, an economic development expert, Jefferson Awards are given to “ordinary people who do extraordinary things." Harriett is being honored for her work with students over the past ten years. A tutoring program she began at Thurgood Marshall Elementary School has grown to include 80 tutors and 90 third to fifth grade students, drawn from four elementary schools in Seattle. “Invest In Youth” works with the children every week, setting realistic goals and teaching responsibility. Receiving a Jefferson Award is a tremendous honor. Congratulations, Harriett!
