For March, the meeting will focus on bicycles and pedestrian issues. Our speaker will be Peg Staeheli, a founding principal of SvR Design and former member of the Seattle Pedestrian Advisory Board. Peg has extensive design experience in pedestrian treatments for urban and residential projects. Please join us for what promises to be a very interesting and stimulating morning. 03 / 27 Land Use Committee Start: 12:30 pm End: 2:30 pm Thursday, March 27 12:30 to 2:30 PM Park Shore Building 1630 43rd Ave. East Seattle, WA (in Madison Park) The Land Use Committee will review a draft design proposal prepared by SRG Partnership in anticipation of this fall's public vote on a levy providing $80 million for infrastructure and other upgrades at Seattle's century-old Pike Place Market. If passed, approximately 85% of these levy monies would go to upgrade infrastructure that has not received any major work in over thirty years; additionally, the number of public restrooms and elevators would be increased to better serve the nearly 10 million visitors the Market welcomes each year. more info

We are finalizing details to partner on a project to provide students and newspaper readers with information on the people and process involved in the national election. At the March meeting, the committee continued work on the May unit materials and a forum on voting rights. Members reported on work with the Real Change Organizing Project and the Seattle League board’s endorsement of the petition to urge the City of Seattle to stop all non-emergency sweeps and focus instead on expanding housing with supportive services for those leaving homelessness. 04 / 15 Transportation Committee Start: 10:30 am End: 12:30 pm Tuesday, April 15 10:30 to 12:30 PM Skagit Station 105 E. Kincaid Mount Vernon, WA The Transportation Committee is going for a special meeting and an outing in April. Our meeting date is the usual 3rd Tuesday—but we’re going to Mount Vernon to meet with Martha Rose, Director of Island Transit and Dale O’Brien, Director of Skagit Transit. The meeting will be at Skagit Station, a multimodal transit center where the buses come in from Bellingham, from Whidbey and Camano Islands, and from Everett—and where Greyhound and Amtrak also come in. The reason the meeting time is a bit later than usual is so Leaguers from Bellingham and the islands can consider coming to the meeting—and coming by bus. Those of us going north from the Puget Sound region will probably want to carpool, because the bus schedules don’t work well for us. BUT! If we carpool, at least some of us plan to go on over to see the tulip fields after the meeting. It’s that time of year.
